phi phi island, day 4 | anniversary trip

It was lovely to wake up to nature, although not exactly the forest or jungle – and I would not like that, creatively man-made nature is just fine by me.

We had our breakfast at the Chunut House bakery, which is located a minute away from the front desk (there is actually a passage to pass through to the bakery).

We were happy with the American breakfast and nice coffee.

some walking is good during holidaychunut house - phi phi island, thailand

Chunut House is not that suitable for senior travelers or the physically challenged, as there are quite many steps to climb before reaching your cozy hut.

I was quite happy with the bit of walking and climbing to hopefully burn off some huge input of calories. It really doesn’t help to be married to someone who has a inhumanly high metabolism rate and doesn’t put weight after the many meals.

You know I really enjoyed the place when you see many photos of the room and surrounding. The toilet is a few steps lower than the room. It has no air-con and you get some natural light coming in from the roof. It is very cohesive with the islandy feel.

The shower area is another few steps lower than the wash basin area.

It was really nice to stay in a hut of your own, a sense of independence, privacy, and freedom.

The bamboo flooring at the balcony needs regular maintenance though, there were some broken bamboos that your foot may go through. The staff lit up the mosquitoes incense coil just before the nightfall, so that we could enjoy better sleep. I slept well alright, Mike didn’t. Apparently, there has been studies that his blood type attracts mosquitoes, and his high metabolism rate means he is constantly ‘hot’, that qualifies him as the ultimate mozzie-man who provides high-grade delicacy to the blood-suckers.

Good for me, in that sense, since I was treated as ‘low-quality food caterer’ in the eyes of the mozzies.

We were delighted to find the cat still around. I was worried that the cat may go somewhere else.

lookie, who is up!

The perfect holiday is one that requires minimal struggle to do anything, or to make difficult decisions. The perfect holiday is one that we do exactly what we feel like doing, at no one else’s expenses, or to possibly causing distraught to anyone. My perfect holiday is doing less for more.

I have wanted a cat as pet forever, and although this was far from a taster for me as a pet owner, since we didn’t have to feed or care for the cat – the staff at Chunut House feed them – but this experience ascertains that I derive much pleasures from observing, playing, and taking photos of the cat. Appreciating simple pleasures.

The husband read his novel while I took picture, gamed, and napped!

More cats around Chunut House. Almost every hut has a house cat.

drink ourselves silly (chunut house)

And, we drank to our hearts’ contents. Alcohol is great when taken in moderation, it helps to chase out some nagging thoughts that our workaholic minds are accustomed to. We were reminded to take a relaxed seat, and savour into the sweetness of doing nothing important.

I have a feeling that this holiday would set another tradition for us. We might just grab ourselves some alcohol at the DFS at the airport before departure for all the trips that follow.

Perhaps, someday, I would start a new page and name it ‘P&M’s Traditions’ and record the growing traditions that we develop overtime. That is one of the benefits of being married, we get to set our own traditions and call them our very own!

Mike went out while I was taking photos, and surfing on the internet. He made a brief trip to the town and came back with a present! A crocheted straw hat! It would be perfect, since I forgot to bring a hat, and I really hate the strong sun. It would probably be a better option than my cute brolly. No one carries a brolly around here. I love resort island and many things that come along with the island; sunbathing is never one of them. We were being mistaken as Japanese, probably because I am fairer than most tanned tourists. :P

After the many bad meals we had, I decided to check on the Tripadvisor for sound advice on food recommendations. I wrote down several, and ‘Lemongrass‘ was one of the highly recommended restaurants.

With that done, we went out for lunch.

the boy looked hard with disappointment

We went to Papaya, and Lemongrass. The husband stared in disbelief, and disappointment when both were not opened for business. They might away for vacation, since that was the Chinese New Year period and the restaurants may be operated by Thai Chinese.

We went to the next stop, Madame Resto – actually we passed by Madame Resto before hunting down Papaya, and Lemongrass, but since Madame Resto is specialized in Italian food, we decided to check out the earlier two first.

We weren’t holding high hopes in this restaurant, just so we won’t be disappointed again.

yummy pizza from madam restaurant

The pizza was exceptional! The relentless husband braved himself and ordered the clear soup tom yam goong, and he was more than delighted when he had his first sip! This meal was big for the stay on Phi Phi, it became our favorite restaurant that day!

cats in the act

Phi Phi is an island of meows, and I am not lying. You see cats everywhere, and anywhere!

After lunch, we went back to the hotel, and Mike napped. He eats more when on holiday, and the full meal almost always result in the sleeping husband.

I attempted to read the novel with a glass of cocktail. I couldn’t really read the book, as I found a distraction – new smart phone – and facebooking instantly can be highly addictive!

peeping mike!

And the husband woke up after the brief nap. He decided to go out for a stroll, at least that was what he said.

hell lot of stairs!!!climbing the stairs...

Let me tell you, ‘stroll’ is definitely an understatement! He went up to the View Point and returned with too much sweating, and tons of photos!

He took a really long way up there, and I was glad he decided to take on the adventure alone. The view may be spectacular, but to climb too many steps and walk too long a way for? Nah! I would be equally happy, if not happier to just view it from the photos.

phi phi beach

So, it was the anniversary day, and we decided to have a nice meal at another highly recommended eating place – Ciao Bella.  It seemed perfect. Ciao Bella is situated just along the beach, and the sun was setting. A light scent of romance filled the air.

ciao bella - feed me, or feed the mozzies?

So, we got ourselves a table, and our moods were too great to allow the nonchalant and unfriendly waitress to spoil it. We waited for a bit before we managed to get hold of the busy-on-the-cell phone waitress to take the order. All was good, we thought.

ciao bella - feed me, or feed the mozzies?

Then, the nightfall upon us soon, so was the flock of mozzies, giant mozzies! We could hear the mozzies buzzed in our ears and we couldn’t enjoy each other’s company due to the constant mosquitoes bites. We had to lift our legs and sit with folded legs. That didn’t help either.

ciao bella - feed me, or feed the mozzies?ciao bella - feed me, or feed the mozzies?

We hoped that at least the food could patch the flaw. The salmon fish that I ordered was not well prepared and perhaps not fresh, it tasted too fishy; Mike’s spaghetti turned into pasta and not fully cooked. When we complained to the waitress of the pasta, she argued that the pasta was specially shipped from Italy and they should taste that way.

ciao bella - feed me, or feed the mozzies?

We asked for the bill shortly without finishing the poorly prepared food, which would now be overpriced, since they weren’t exactly edible.

The anniversary dinner didn’t end too badly though, Madame Resto saved the night for us. We headed back there, and the friendly staff was a cheer-on already. Mike had clear soup rice noodles, while I ordered Maya pancake with ice-cream. The Maya pancake took a long time to be served, but the friendly service and better food made it all okay.

Satisfied, we went back to the hotel.

We watched ‘The Town‘ on the lappy but I slept before the movie finished. I was tired with much walking, and I wasn’t exactly looking for another nightmare with horrifying images in the dream.
