attending wedding in vietnam

Ferry terminal in Ho Chi Minh

Mike is off to Vung Tau, Vietnam to attend his brother’s wedding. Vung Tau is located near Ho Chi Minh city, and the fastest way to travel to Vung Tau from HCM city, would be by hydrofoil.

Mike sent me this photo while waiting at the ferry terminal yesterday.

view from the hotel

Vung Tau is an island, and this is what greets Mike in the morning. Accordingly, the temple (the small ‘island’ across the main island) can only be visited during low tide.

The first impression that I got, off the photo, was that the scenery looks really ‘tired’. Can’t quite tell if this island is very commercialized based on this photo alone. It reminds me a little of Koh Samui which impression was left with me for at least 10 years back.

baby cousin’s wedding – clarice & andrew

It’s mixed feelings when someone in your family gets married, isn’t it?

I haven’t been active, or rather, I have been really absent in the scenes of family gatherings, for as long as 10 over years. You won’t catch me during Lunar New Year, nor during Christmas, nor any other occasions… Regrettably, it’s probably the funeral that you may see a bit of me.

I am not going to find excuses, sincerely honest, I am just not a group person.

My baby cousin is recently married. Apart from being really swamped with work, it’s just not a surprise that I didn’t attend the wedding.

Clarice is baby cousin. I remembered her as a small girl with lovely dimples. When we were younger, when I was still tagging along with my parents for most family occasions, she was always the sun flower standing out in the crowd. She has always been someone who brings joy, and you just need to look at her, to blow any blues away, in an instant.

Her wedding photos can be viewed at this blog. As I went through the photos, I was daunted by the realization that she has grown to be such a fine lady. I feel that I barely knew her, yet it seems like I have known her for life.

My wishes for the couple were delivered to them by the wedding couple doll I made for them. It’s nothing much, just sincere wishes. I am just a simple person with simple intention.

Wedding book printed with Blurb arrived!

My wedding book arrived earlier than I expected! I am definitely loving it!

Wedding book printed with blurb

Using imagewrap style, so it’s wrapped around.. sweet! I chose the wedding day footage for the front cover. This is one of my favorite! I don’t know why, but this photo seems to have many stories to tell, evoking imagination.

Wedding book (back)

At the back cover, I merely included the vows (extracted from the marriage certificate cover). Simple is nice.

Wedding book title page

Our wedding was pretty much a cartoony theme. This image (copyright to me) was used on our wedding invites; wedding favors; and direction signboard etc. I thought it would be nice to print this on the title page as an opening.

Inside the wedding book

Inside the book: I have a full page of my parents and I; while the other page is divided into 2 images page.

Inside the wedding book

Inside the book: The pages are arranged in such a way that it all started from getting ready; to the groom’s place; to venue; to airport.

These were taken in Mike’s place. On the right, would be Joycez, Mike’s sister, who is also my buddy! Well, I have to give her a full page feature, so that she wouldn’t nag at me when she next sees me (I have gone MIA for a loooooooong time, I’ve been really busy)

The opposite page shows a highlight of us paying our respects to the ancestors; while the smaller images on the side are photos in relevance to the highlight, but mainly to enhance the highlight photo.

Inside the wedding book

Inside the book: I like the irregular mosaic layout. It gives the versatility to highlight one or two photos, while the rest gives a really nice touch to the entire layout.

On the right, would be standard mosaic layout which I super cropped the images. It’s really simple to do with Blurb application software. You know how some of the photos would show just the backs of the groom or bride, when the friends reached the venue etc. I decided that I had enough of our ‘backs’ and just zoom in the photo, just so that the faces of friends are more visible and cropped out the other stuffs.

Inside the wedding book

For the left of the page, I wanted to show some ‘emotions’ here; perhaps anxiety? (top left, where Mike was playing with his finger) perhaps anticipation? (top bottom, where I was looking out) Both photos were candid takes. Nice work, Wayne.

On the left, I blow up the photo, which I took with my baby niece, Mindy. This, is really to please my parents. Mindy is their favorite pet!

Inside the wedding book

This would be the page of love. We said our ‘I Dos’; and when rings were exchanged. The process was of course sealed with a kiss.

Inside the wedding book

I tried to layout the pages in such a way that, if I have a full bleed page (left) I would like to have a gapped page on the opposite page, so that the pages wouldn’t appear too cluttered.

Oh, the page on the left, I actually cropped away our solemnizer. LOL.. Seriously, we didn’t have many photos with just the 2 of us, we were really busy entertaining our own friends, so we were always apart.

Inside the wedding book

Sure, Wayne followed me most of the time, (who wants to see the groom as much as they want to see the bride!) Don’t you just love the layout options?

Last page of the wedding book

Our last page… We had our footage taken at the airport, not just for the sake of it you know. We really did had a flight to catch right after the photography session!

I am a half day gal, friends who know me, know this too. I can’t manage a full day event, so we had long planned the festivity to end latest by 3pm, and we took off to the airport. My parents and relatives were more than pleased to stick around at the venue, and helped with tying the loose ends. My mum is the greatest!!!

It was really fun though, that day, was MY DAY, for once, I felt most special and didn’t feel a bit of shyness crept up to me while we walked around the airport while eyes were all over us. We were enjoying the moment completely!

Last page of the wedding

Wedding is most fun and enjoyable when we are able to do it the way we want. Do we really think that the guests who may wag their nasty tongues over the petty things such as dessert, chairs, location etc, would really remember this day for their lives?

IMO, this day belongs to us, and will always be. It is important that we get to do it the way we have always wanted, Mike and I gets to grow old together to reminisce the good old moments. I couldn’t bring myself to thinking that we may end up complaining and regretting what we ‘could’ have done on our wedding.

I sure hope all parents get to understand this though. I didn’t had it all that easy too, but I am very fortunate to have a crazy sister who happens to understands me very well. hahahaha. It’s easier when there is a ‘bridge of communication’ at home, so that my mum gets to hear another voice apart from mine which she had set to ‘filter off’.

Going through the pages of my wedding book, brings back the desire of getting married all over again.. hahaha. We had so much fun, we never had enough of it.

The book turns out so well, I am ready to print my annual travel book with blurb now. I may want to print my product catalogue too, after all, it’s so affordable to print, and the shipping is lightning fast!

what really happened on the big day!

5.30am – my anxious dad called me on my cell phone from the land line outside and said ‘Ooi, leow, wakey wakey’ (I actually set my alarm at 6am!!!)

5.30am - I dragged myself out of the bed, dilly-dally, took a warm shower, made myself a nice cuppa coffee, took breakfast, went into the room, on the PC, played 12 girls’ band music, checked email, MSN with Cynthia, post messages at brides forum (what was I thinking about???)

6.40am – Started my DIY makeup

NSW_1501

7.00am – Wayne the photographer arrived at the door, the first thing he said was ‘Hey, your place is very difficult to locate eh’

I continued with my makeup while Wayne started snapping away on the camera, amused with the fact that I had only a small mirror to work on, and sat on a Ikea small stool. I sent a text messgae to Mike to request for delayed arrival at 8.30am instead.

Then I sat on the floor at the living room blow-drying my hair, while dad spoke with the new found football Kaki (Wayne) on the football matches. Wayne being all alert, took some pictures while I was blowing my hair, and tried to speak with dad at the same time. Dad was also speaking to me, seriously, I couldn’t exactly hear him well with the hair dyer by my ear!

NSW_1547 NSW_1549

Then I started to style my hair, and clipped on the DIY veil. Wayne questioned, ‘This is the first time I am seeing a bride putting on her own veil!’. (I simply shrugged off with a sheepish smile)

NSW_1557 NSW_1558

I then changed into the bridal dress (Mistake! It was difficult to change with my veil already on!!!) Packed in some stuffs into our luggage.

NSW_1570

8.10am – I was all ready! Sent another sms to Mike, who was having coffee with his brother team at the coffee shop downstairs. Meanwhile, Wayne snapped some family photos, I’m not sure, but my parents were very camera shy, Wayne had a hard time getting them to smile.

NSW_1576 NSW_1575

I tried on the wedding shoes, oh gosh, 2.5″ was a little too high on heels to walk the day! I turned to Wayne and said, ‘How arh, I can’t sit with my ‘breath-taking dress’ and now I can’t stand with my feet hurting shoes!’

8.20am – Mike arrived, the door was already opened (hahaha)

Mum came to us and with a really serious tone.. ‘This is very important… Take 4-D numbers first’ (everyone laughed)

NSW_1590NSW_1592

Shortly, we proceed to leave my home, and while downstairs, we started to doll up the contour-age cars. Oh, did I mentioned that Mike was the driver of the bridal car?

NSW_1599NSW_1606

While on the way to Mike’s place, Mike suddenly remembered, ‘Oh my, I forgot to bring the ‘guo da li’ items to your home just now!’ We then laughed very loudly. It was funny how this slipped by unnoticed by anyone at home!

Wayne called me on my cell phone to ask if anyone was opening the bridal car for me when we reached Mike’s place, I said ‘No lah, I will open the door myself’ ‘Errr, then can you let me reach there first, so that I can take some pictures of your arrival’ So we slowed down and stopped over the roadside, for the entourage car to pass, there I snapped 2 pics from my phone camera.

9am – Reached Mike’s place, had tea ceremony, with a little chaos. Mike did not call back before turning up, so everyone at home was caught off-guard with the couple’s arrival. Some were not changed, some were out for breakfast. Alas, everything fell into places nicely.

NSW_1695NSW_1699

10.10am – Left Mike’s place back to my place. The rare scene was that the bride, groom, photographer were carrying the guo da li items up to my place.

NSW_1716

In the lift, Mike received a call from his client who wanted to purchase travel insurance! The first thing we did when we reached home was to switch on the PC, and Mike started to work on the premium. Wayne remarked, ‘Never seen couple getting married and yet still working!’

NSW_1723NSW_1725

11.10am – Reached venue, pleased with the nice set up at the venue by the florist and caterer. My relatives were all smiley faces when they saw me, who soon turned into frowning faces when I waved hi to them. ‘Bride, try to behave more demurely, stop pulling up your dress, and don’t wave your hands so frantically in the air’, one of my aunts said.

NSW_1778

11.30am – Tea ceremony for my relatives started.

NSW_1820NSW_1821

12.30pm – JP Chan arrived, and began the solemnisation soon. He was one great JP, very thoughtful and also cracked a few great jokes. Mike was made to say ‘Yes I do’ thrice, and we were made to kiss twice, as we parted too quickly, JP Chan said ‘Hey, don’t part so quickly, the photographer needs to snap a pic, do it again’.

NSW_1900NSW_1895
NSW_1911NSW_1908

Another awkward and panicky moment would be when we heard JP Chan mentioned about ‘ring exchange’. I turned to look at Wayne who already knew that we were already wearing the rings! Therefore we would not have rings to exchange!!! Without anyone looking or knowing, we took off the rings quietly, and handed to each other the rings and held the rings. Oh well, Wayne had caught the aftermath in the picture though. We also had problem holding hands, it turned out that I was holding Mike’s hand instead of him holding my hands. Know what I mean?

NSW_1891 NSW_1910

12.45pm – Party time!

We were both so busy entertaining our own guests, Wayne asked, ‘errr, how come the couple is always separately walking around? The pictures are either bride with friends; or groom with friends’

(That didn’t change anything, we were still entertaining guests separately! hahaha)

NSW_1945NSW_1976

3.00pm – by this time, most of the guests had left the venue. Stayed behind were few friends and some relatives. My brother-in-law’s sister was so happy for me, she said with almost hysterical tone, ‘Aiyo, you are finally married leow’. We left for airport after bidding goodbye to my parents and friends at venue.

NSW_2074

Lek and Jess together with Mike and I took one car; while Wayne and Rex took another. We waited up for Rex at the Airport carpark, as they stopped over at petro kiosk to pump up fuel.

Shortly they arrived to join us and we started to take some ending footage at the airport. Wayne seemed more excited than Mike and I, as he thought it was rare to have wedded couple leaving for honeymoon right after the wedding event.

After the photoshoot, I went on to change down the dress to a really casual dress code. Sleeveless top with cropped pants, and slipped into slippers, and removed the veil.

Mike did not change his attire, he simply took off his coat. That made us looked like the characters from a movie; a businessman with a runaway kampong girl!

The event ended really nicely and funnily, and we took off to Bangkok!!!!!

8pm – Checked-in to our hotel in Bangkok, and was pleasantly surprised with the complimentary fruits platter and cake specially provided for honeymooner.

We ordered room service and enjoyed the yummy dinner in the comfort of our room. It was a fun and thrilling day, and we were tired, so we decided to unpack the luggage the next day. Just when I  was falling asleep, Mike remembered, ‘Dear, know what? I did not give the wedding speech today!’. Our wedding night ended with laughters!
