krabi, day 2 | anniversary trip

My farmvilled-brain woke up rather early as I recalled that I had not harvested the crops, so I did. Along with that, I checked emails and processed some orders.

Although the hotel had been a disappointment, I have to say that the staff were friendly and warm, and the food served at the restaurant (you actually enter into the ‘lobby’ – if you consider that as lobby where there is a work desk and a sitting area set up in a really small section of the ground floor – through the restaurant) was quite tasty. The room rates came with a complimentary American breakfast.

We headed back to the room after breakfast. Mike watched ‘Skyline‘ while I played ‘zuma revenge‘ on the android phone.

We would normally go out when it’s almost lunch time. Mike eats a lot when we travel, he is forever hungry, and sleeps after the full meal, and wakes up feeling hungry again. It would be great if I had half of his super metabolism rate!

We purchased the ferry ticket for the next day to Phi Phi Island at THB350 per person. The operator will be arranging a pick-up from our hotel to the pier.

I am still trying to work out the best plan on meals-hunting. Mike gets hungry easily when on holiday, yet, he has the patience and probably takes joy in hunting for a good meal. On the other hand, I am better known as ‘the no-hassle foodie’, I don’t particularly enjoy spending too much time soaking in the humid climate and lose appetite when I perspire.

It’s a similar trend whenever we travel to Thailand – hunting for the best Tom Yum soup.

We found one pleasant-looking restaurant, Blue Orchid and decide to lunch there. Any further walk, I will collapse out of dehydration, and probably heat stroke!

I brought my little umbrella out this time to avoid tan-lines and sunburn. The weather was as crazy as Singapore’s. It was hot and sunny in one minute, and rained heavily by next. The brolly sure came handy for either extreme weather!

We bought some stuffs while avoiding the heavy downpour.

The rain stopped quite abruptly, and rained quite suddenly later. Between them, it was sheer humidity and warm air. I wanted ice-cream so we went into the Black Canyon Coffee cafe.

daily walk

After ice-cream, we went back to the hotel.

Mike made me a glass of Absolut Apeach with orange juice, while he had Macallan with tonic water.

I logged on to the free wi-fi in the room, and checked more on Supragan Resort which I booked the day before. I wanted to read up more on the facilities and location which I might have missed in haste at booking.

The villa looked and quite large, but it is located in the middle of nowhere – at least I felt so – and internet is chargeable. Personally, I think internet should be complimentary, just like complimentary bottled water. In the advancing world, internet is no longer an additional, it is an essential necessity.

So, I decided it was not ideal, and since we were still within the free cancellation grace period, I decided to research lightly on other accommodation that may suit our needs better.

I found Blue Village on the booking.com, and the raved reviews caught my eye. They offer free wi-fi throughout the entire property and shuttle service to the shopping strip! Mike took a glance at the location on google maps, and said that we could walk up to take a look. I thought that was a crazy idea, it looked really far from where we were! He convinced me that it was within short walking distance – you’ve got to understand that my dear husband has a knack for walking long distances and shrink that distance down to a quarter of the actual distance when he conveys the message to me.

Anyhow, we grab some stuffs and headed out to check out on the potential next-to-stay accommodation.

blue village - aonang, krabi

Indeed, it was not as far as I thought. Blue Village is located further down the road where Bann Ban Dalay is.

We approached the front desk and asked if we could just tour around the premise for a bit. The very friendly lady at the front desk pointed us to the entrance and told us to feel free to look around – she spoke perfect English.

The standalone huts surrounded by greens, and further up a swimming pool – which didn’t concern me, since I don’t swim. We were quite excited with the idea of staying here when we return from Phi Phi.

We didn’t book the room at the front desk as the walk-in rates is much higher than online booking.

We proceed to cancel the previous booking and booked for Blue Village at THB9995 for 5 nights.

Satisfied and finally relieved to have one matter to lift off the mind. We watched Mega Mind on the notebook but didn’t finish watching and decide to go out for dinner.

Mike suggested that we should dine at the Lae Lay Grill – the restaurant at the hill-top, and in order to catch the sunset, we should leave earlier. It looked kind of interesting, as they had a sheltered station down the foot of the hill set up with table and chair where a female staff would promote the place and arrange for transportation up to the restaurant.

So, the tuk tuk was waiting for us, and up we went to the restaurant!

up up you go! (lae lay grill)

Unfortunately, there was just so far the tuk tuk could bring us. There were quite many steps to climb – so this is no place for the elderly or physically challenged – before entering the restaurant. Just try not to pant too hard when welcomed by the restaurant staff.

Quite a walking distance to walk up to from the foot of the slope.

We chose to sit at the open space table, where we watch the scenic sunset while waiting for the food to be served.

some romantic paved walk from the ladies room

The ladies room is located at a separate building – more like a stone hut – away from the restaurant. I took a picture of the nicely lit paved walkway after I had used the washroom and was returning to the restaurant. There was a Caucasian lady behind me, who stopped too, and I heard her snapping away with her phone camera after I was done with photo taking.

The kitchen is an open concept, so you get to see many chefs preparing the meals.

a little romantic ambience

Romantic ambiance always make the food taste better.

I tried the campari which tasted like the sweetened herbal tea, in very concentrated dosage.

I enjoyed the dinner very much. The food was great, but the winning score is the unbeatable ambiance with scenic view.

What can I tell you, holiday is really about eat, sleep, eat more, sleep even more. Shopping is never really my kind of activity; massages and slow walks in perfectly cool weather would make it to my favorite things to do though.

When you asked for the bill, the staff would ask if you require a taxi to bring you down. I didn’t quite get the question, and declined politely. We decided later that the weather was cool enough to walk down anyway, especially after a full meal, some walking should do some good.

We went out to the tourist street and bought some DVD. Then, we bought 2 hand sculptures – also known as the fortune hand. In another shop, we bought some tees, and with that, we headed back to the hotel.

The day began and ended with farmvilling – that goes to show how heavily I have weighted my life on the world-wide web. We finished watch the Mega Mind after that.

krabi – day 1 | anniversary trip

the journey begins...

remembering to bring novels this time

We were up at 7.30am and did the final pack up, and this time I made sure to pack the novels in the bag.

It was a little nerve wrecking for me whenever it comes to flagging taxi down off the roadside. For some reasons, the mothers around my neighborhood have no manners or morals, they would ‘scoot’ out from the corner of your eyes and hijack the taxi right in front of you!

We tried to book the taxi over the phone but as it was the peak hours, and to make matter worse, it began to drizzle, so we weren’t able to book any taxi from different operators. I guess it was quite a good day, since we managed to get a taxi by the roadside instead.

Breakfast was settled at the cafeteria inside the airport terminal. Before entering the boarding gate, we bought Absolut Apeach and Macallan scotch at the DFS.

Airport has an amazing magic – especially that the almost only reason I travel is for leisure and pleasure – the minute we arrived at the airport, budget or not, it feels holiday almost instantaneously.

Singapore to Krabi is a short distance flight (under 3 hrs). Soon, we arrived at Krabi International Airport, which is surprisingly small.

We took a shuttle bus service to our hotel, since we didn’t carry hard case luggage this time around.

bann dalay - aonang, krabi

It was a long long, very long ride from the Airport to the hotel, as our hotel was located at the farthest in the shuttle service route, and there were many stop-overs to drop off other passengers to their hotels.

We booked the room at Baan Ban Dalay, Aonang for 2 nights, and then we will travel to Phi Phi Island, and back to the same hotel for another few more nights.

It was horrendous when we spotted ants in the mini fridge! Nothing else worked properly. The television wasn’t working, so was the telephone, so was the safe.

Many thoughts ran through my mind, and it was no way to start a holiday like this. We had lunch at the hotel restaurant, and requested for a room change.

The staff at the reception desk spoke very little English, but we managed to relate our concerns and request. She brought us to another room – the last room, as they were overbooked – and asked that we return to our original room to get the remote control for the aircon unit since there wasn’t any in this room.

We were disappointed, but weren’t upset. We weren’t planning on ruining the holiday over this trivial matter just as yet.

The ‘holiday routine’ set in quickly for the husband. He napped for a bit while I gamed on my sparkling new smart phone.

While the husband was sleeping, I surfed the internet and cancelled the booking for 3-8 Feb. Good thing we booked with booking.com and they probably have the best cancelation policy. We were in time to cancel without penalty.

I checked on other hotels and booked Supragan Resort (Villa) at THB9000 for 5 nights; a difference of THB1000 from what we would have paid to Bann Ban Dalay.

We went out to buy some snacks and drinks at a mini-mart. We had dinner at one of the restaurant along the long stretch of shopping area.

We stopped over at the diving center ‘Kon-Tiki’ to inquire about diving packages, for Mike. Mike was considering diving either on Phi Phi Island, or when we return to Krabi after Phi Phi.

The television in the room was practically useless since it was hardly visible due to very poor reception; and most channels were in local language. We watched DVD on the notebook instead.

It was a very scary movie – Case 39 – it reminded me of ‘Orphan, there is something wrong with Esther‘ ! I don’t know, what’s with the horror movies during holiday? I turned my head away from the screen by the time the show was showing half way through.

[anniversary trip] day 9 in darwin, OZ, Thu 18 Feb 2010

standing out...

Yes, you may say that I never learn from my lesson, it was another ‘Lost’ episode last night which made my mind worked super hard while sleeping. The air con unit was a tad too noisy, so I woke up a few times.

I woke up at 8am, which was considered early since I had been waking up a lot later since in Darwin. Made breakfast and put the dishes into washer to wash.

Since the flight is 4.10pm, and Lawrence was nice to allow very late check-out. We decided to check out at around 1.30pm and have lunch at the airport.

It was a conflicting feeling on the last day in Darwin. I yearned to go back home because there was so much work to be done, and I love my work. At the same time, I loved to stay in Darwin doing nothing too.

We chose not to have car rental for this trip to keep activities to the minimum. If we had rented a car, we would try to make full use of the car, and plan many activities and may end up feeling more exhausted after the holiday. It somewhat defeat the purpose of ‘vacation’ in my context. This kind of holiday is simply perfect. We achieve more by doing less.

[anniversary trip] day 8 in darwin, OZ – Wed, 17 Feb 2010

It was a bad decision to watch Lost before sleep. The show was so duper confusing with the various time zones, I didn’t sleep well last night, because my mind was very active in trying to figure out the show for most of the sleeping time!

It was the official ‘start work’ day for Lunar New Year, so I got up to make myself a nice cuppa coffee, and then checked my work email. Sent out orders, replied some other emails and Mike was up asking for coffee.

We had the usual breakfast, I love my turkey breast grained sandwich so much, I love mornings!!!! Seriously!!!

We ended up staying in the apartment for the whole day! We had enough food for the day, in fact, we needed to finish all the foodstuffs.

[anniversary trip] day 7 in darwin, OZ – Tue, 16 Feb 2010

Pintu Merah 4.5* apartment in Darwin

I am not sure if the breakfast in the cafes would be better, I was ‘motivated’ to get out of the bed every morning during the entire stay in Darwin, because I could make myself a marvelously tasty turkey breast sandwich to go along with the heavenly freshly brewed flat white from the Nepresso machine.. yums!

We only went out in the afternoon, when the sun was less scorching, as eczema was acting up real bad on me.

We went to Coles Supermarket to stock up the fridge, and I went back to the Pharmacy to buy the DermaVeeen body cream.

Mike bought a pack of 5s of Mee Goreng from Indo Mie and found it really tasty, and ended up having another plate of it. I had mixed vegetables salad, and garlic pizza for dinner.

I was looking forward to watch NCIS and NCIS LA which were in the telly program for the night. I might have drank too much coffee in the day, and couldn’t get to sleep, so we watched Lost which showed on late night.
