A Restful and Interesting Vacation to Kick-Start the Year of Dragon

20120129-113236.jpg

We started a restful and unexpectedly interesting vacation before kick-starting the year of Dragon.

When we booked the room, we knew what we were getting ourselves into, we just didn’t expect a series of pleasant encounters and experiences while staying in a small and somewhat private compound of 4 independent traditional Thai houses.

We’ve been needing a well rested vacation, to catch up with reading, and just physical and mental rest. Apart from achieving that objective during this vacation, we have enjoyed great company during our stay – from the exceptional hosts (young Chinese couple who speaks considerably good English and fluent Mandarin), and the 3 house-kittens and occasional visits of other cats from the neighbors.

Bonus and lessons:
1. Our Mandarin ought to be improved; half the time, we paused in between sentences and tried to figure out the appropriate Chinese words to express our thoughts, while communicating with the hosts.
2. We have traveled to Thailand countless of times now, it’s a shame that we hardly knew the history, or culture of the Thai. From this couple, we learnt a tad more about Thai living, and also took an inside perspective into the Chinese culture.

By learning, we may then hope to understand the behaviors and attitudes of people from all over the world, and all walks of life.

ubud, bali, day 6 | hiding out at ‘coffee and…’ cafe from rain

scenic view from the back of the bungalow

I woke up quite reluctantly at 7.30am, as we had arranged for breakfast to be served at 8am. Mike turned on the television as soon as he was awake, even before he washed up.

‘… we have lost’ was heard immediately after the television was switched on. It was our Prime Mister Lee Hsien Loong on the news channel, addressing the citizen on the result of the General Election. We were in disbelief! It was a rerun, apparently, the speech was made around 3.30am.

We were in a fuzzy dizzy state of mind for a while on what to grasp on the incomplete speech we had just heard. Soon, the breakfast arrived.

It had rained, so the air was clear of smoky smell, for a change.

mie goreng

I had my banana pancake – I had the banana pancake on the first morning with Kejane Yangloni, it was so tasty, I kept thinking of it, so I ordered it again – while mike had mie goreng (tried some and it tasted really nice too!).

I think I might want mie goreng tomorrow or nasi goreng in the healthy menu. Decision, decision!

We spent some good time over breakfast surfing on the internet to read up on the Election aftermath. There was no real need actually, the Facebook was flooded by all sorts of reactions.

I couldn’t believe that we lost our Foreign Minister over the Election. I’d never been able to fully understand the constituencies and grouping stuff, and I never knew that we could lose a highly respected Minister over this! When I ‘came to’, there was some cursing and swearing on the ridiculous system that resulted in this absurd outcome. Oh well, it had nothing to do with which party I supported, it was more to do with the logic.

Slowly but surely, we came to term with the outcome, and that just made our holiday an even more memorable one!

one window closes, another opens

We stayed in for the morning, with the television turned on to the news channel which played the Election aftermath repeatedly, and later switched to the MTV International Channel. Kejane Yangloni is subscribed to reasonably good selection of International channels. more »

ubud, bali, day 3 | moving to Kejane Yangloni

mie goreng for brekkie

Breakfast after shower was Mie Goren for me; and American breakfast for Mike.

While waiting, the call rang, and the front desk said that we had a call from the other hotel. I was surprised since I had not left the contact during booking, but I did the request for a pick up service.

Kajane Yangloni called to confirm the request for complimentary pick up at 12pm from Barong Resort to their hotel. It was so nice for them to call.

After breakfast, I checked my email, processed some orders and recorded the journal on Google Docs. We packed luggage and ready to check out by 11.30am.

unplanned check-out

We waited at the lobby and Kajane’s driver arrived promptly. The driver was very friendly.

welcome to kajane yangloni

honeymooner?

Check-in was a breeze, the staff brought us to our villa which overlooks the paddy fields. We were very excited about the new lodging, the bathroom is partially exposed, and the granite bathtub is huge!

ubud, bali, day 1 | first visit to Bali

bureaucracy talk on the phone..

The alarm clock sounded off at 5am. Showered, prepared, and left home at 7am.

Lek, Mike’s long time buddy agreed to ‘take care’ of our car while we were away, so we were leaving for his place to fetch him.

The check-in was quick and easy, which left us more time, and Mike called the HDB about the transference of season parking ticket to Lek.

Departing to the not too far away land...

We had breakfast at Delifrance after checked-in.

busy busy...

The officer from the HDB parking division was very helpful and waited while we emailed the eTicket to him to process the temporarily transference of the season parking.

The only problem we had was to logon to the wireless@SG, but we managed to locate the StarHub’s login after a few failed trials.

It is always nice to have more time on hand, so that we could start the holiday with a relaxing beat. We used to have to rush to the waiting room for boarding. I really hate rushing.

We decided to give Glenmorangie original a try, as it comes highly recommended by Debbie; along with that, was absolut vodka – berry and acai (the plain is out stock) for me.

Jetstar now provides complimentary water and pastry. I welcome small bites, and appreciate the gesture. I don’t expect extras from budget airline, but I have always been pleased with Jetstar.

Mike ‘transforms’ into a food monster and sleeping creature whenever we travel. We just had breakfast a while ago, and he wanted food again. He had vietnamese curry rice while I had the Indonesia dessert, Pulot Hitam – warm sticky black rice served with coconut milk. The dessert was served cold and without coconut milk, I have to say it didn’t taste good.

It was a short flight, so before we knew it, we had landed on the Denpasar Airport!

We have chosen to stay in Ubud, a quieter area in Bali, so we heard.

I had ordered for Barong Resort’s airport transfer service, days before the trip. I had planned to take photo of the staff holding Mike’s name.

The pick-up was late, and I became nervous due to long stretch of ‘pick-up’. It felt like everyone was looking at you, and that must be true since they were there to pick someone up. more »

aonang, krabi, day 10 | anniversary trip

The first night that I didn’t sleep well. Mike decided he was fed up with the blood-sucking mozzies, so he wore his long-sleeved shirt to sleep. On regular nights, the mozzies would for ‘high grade blood’ – Mike has a different blood type as I and accordingly, his blood is regarded as fine delicacy to the mozzies, while mine would probably be low-grade junk food – and left me undisturbed.

Since my mozzie ‘shield’ was closed for business, the mozzies had no choice but to get the low-grade food – my blood.

massage corner - aonang, krabi

We normally pace down the already very slow pace when approaching the last few days towards the end of the holiday. Mike suggested, or rather, insisted that I should go back for another massage. Sure, bring it on, I say!

So, briefly after breakfast, we went back to Massage Corner. I had the same massage as the day before while Mike decided to take on another challenge and ordered a full body salt scrub. See, Mike has never been a fan of massage, he is very ticklish so he doesn’t enjoy being touched all over. :P

The massage session was… noisy. The boy who took the bed beside mine, with a curtain separating us, made a lot of painful noises and communicated that to the masseur. I was trying to drift away to the dreamland here, Mr!

Alas, the painful session was over! More painful for me than for him, if you must know! more »
